Potential Medication Wastage and Impact on Cost Due to Switching Treatment Among Persons With MS on Oral or Self-Injectable DMTs

Authors DT Okuda, A Patel, R Schuldt, I Abioye, and NG Bonine

Published date16 October, 2023

Unused medications affect patient health outcomes, healthcare resource use and environmental safety and contribute to the 30% of annual healthcare expenditures (~$700 billion) that are defined as waste. Disease-modifying therapy switching is common among persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), which results in substantial medication wastage, but limited data exist on the financial magnitude of unused oral and self-injectable medications due to DMT switching. The objective of this study was to estimate the cost of potential medication wastage (PMW) associated with switching from an oral or self-injectable DMT among pwMS.
